My Journey: From My First Bag at 19 to My Final Collection Before Retirement

My name is Dorothy, and for me, crafting Leather Bags has always been more than just a trade — it’s been my life’s purpose. I’ve been handmaking bags since I was 19 years old. But now, the time has come to set down my tools and step into retirement. My heart has long yearned for more time with my grandchildren, and that season of life has finally arrived.

Let me take you on a personal journey — from my earliest days to today, where I still find peace in the quiet rhythm of my workshop.

🇬🇧 10,000+ Britons Love My Craftsmanship

Rooted in UK — Where Tradition Meets Craftsmanship

I was born in 1969 in UK — a place known for its charm, history, and artisan heritage. My childhood was filled with the scent of leather, the creak of floorboards in our store, and the soft jingle of the door chime as customers walked in.

My parents ran a small but beloved leather goods store downtown. It was there I learned that true craftsmanship goes far beyond technique — it’s about creating something meaningful and lasting.

A Quiet Love for Craft — Nurtured Behind the Scenes

Although my parents had dreams of other careers for me, I was always drawn to the back room — to the workbench.

While other kids were outside riding bikes, I was stitching scraps of leather, oiling hides, and watching transformations happen before my eyes. Those quiet hours taught me things no classroom ever could — and shaped the person I would become.

My Very First Creation — Simple, Honest, Unforgettable

Me at work in my parents' workshop

At 19, I stood at the workbench for the first time, entirely on my own. My father stood beside me as I crafted a small leather crossbody bag — clean lines, soft tan leather, and just enough room for essentials. My mother proudly placed it in the shop’s front window.

That very same day, someone bought it. That moment changed my life. My hands weren’t just making bags — they were telling stories.

Taking Over the Family Store at 22 — With Bold Ideas and a Big Vision

When my parents decided to retire, I was faced with a choice: move on or carry on. I chose to carry forward their legacy — and to build upon it. I gave the store a fresh face, brought in a new team, and introduced new designs that blended classic craftsmanship with modern utility.

The Fire That Took Everything — And Sparked Something New

In the summer of 1993, tragedy struck. A short circuit led to a fire that destroyed everything — the tools, the inventory, the workshop, the memories.

A Fresh Start — Rebuilt With Grit and Grace

But I didn’t give up. I started again — in an old barn on the outskirts of town. It was rough, but it was mine.

With secondhand tools and a notebook full of orders, I stitched my way back. Customers returned — not just for the bags, but to support the story, the effort, the heart behind it all.

A New Business, and a Growing Family

Three years later, I reopened in the very neighborhood where it all began.

Only this time, every detail bore my personal mark. That’s when I met Matthew. He admired the fine stitching on a weekender bag, and we ended up talking for hours. A year later, we got married. And soon after, came Eva.

One-of-a-Kind Leather Goods — Brought into the Digital Age With Eva

Sixteen years later, Eva joined me in the workshop. She had a vision — one that helped us step into the online world. We started on Amazon, then launched our own storefront.

I remained at the bench, Matthew handled operations, and Eva shaped the brand’s future.

Grief and Growth — Carrying His Memory Forward

In 2021, we lost Matthew suddenly. The grief was heavy, but I kept going — not out of obligation, but because crafting is simply who I am.

A quote Matthew loved now hangs above my bench:

“What comes from the heart, stays.”

Now, It’s Time to Close This Chapter

Eva and I both agree — the time is right. Once my final handcrafted bags are sold, I’ll be stepping away from the store.

The next chapter of my life will be all about family — about showing up fully, sharing stories, and creating new memories with my grandchildren.
